Members meeting on the 14th Oct at the Hertford Club:
Attendees included representatives of local traders, businesspeople, local groups and interested parties.
Apologies were given from those wishing to be further involved (such as Fergus McMullen)
Purpose of Association agreed as follows:
To preserve, protect and promote the commercial viability of Hertford.
Suggested names for the Association, aimed at reflecting its purpose, were submitted and ‘ Hertford Hub’ resonated with those present. This will now be the organisations’ name from here on out.
Nominations for official positions were invited including steering group members
Meantime Acting Chair – Martin Berry and acting Secretary – Harry LeCarpentier were proposed and seconded on order that momentum be maintained
Structure/Type of Association was discussed and further exploration of Company Limited by Guarantee to be made.
Community links with group representatives present were discussed and organisations with which to liaise were identified. The Facebook page ‘Love Hertford’ promises support and offers publicity.
Martin reported on the initial positive meeting with Council representatives.
Our steering group representatives were Harry, Martin and Tony Emmott – retired planning lawyer.
Details of current Birchley Green (BG) problems were shared and discussed; the Council was honest about the limit of its powers in relation to private property. It was also receptive to the concerns expressed by our representatives. Various aspects of Hertford access issues were discussed, and several potential changes identified including extending adding to the 30 min parking limit in Fore St and daytime use for the public of the taxi rank there.
There is £1000 allocated to a business allowing public access to its toilets.
A really positive outcome was that the Association has been invited to join the Council’s Berchley Green steering Group and to participate throughout the project. This is a fantastic opportunity for us to ensure that we can analyse and present the potential commercial impact of any proposals made by the developer to the Council during the planning stages, thus ensuring that we don’t learn too little too late. We have been given a powerful and influential role in negotiations.
AS A RESULT:
Martin attended the Berchley Green Steering Group meeting on Tuesday 15th October. Unfortunately, there are confidential aspects of this meeting which must be respected, and we await his full report once a significant joint statement by the Council and Developer has been issued publicly.
Once the website and database are up and running we will keep you posted on developments; let you know how you can be further involved or just have your say and encourage you to bring others on board.
This is your chance to influence the way forward for Hertford!
We will let you know the date and time of the next meeting.
